It can also come from over-conditioning or from moisture and mold in the leather. Mild cases: wipe gently, air the bag out, reduce humidity. Severe cases (gummy, peeling): a specialist needs to strip the failed coating and restore the finish — it won't always look brand new, depending on the material. Prevention: store somewhere ventilated with a desiccant, never seal in plastic, and rotate your bags.
